Fall Into Peel Season: Your Guide to Chemical Peels in Tigard & Vancouver

Summer was good to us. It usually isn’t as kind to our skin.

By fall, most of us are seeing the evidence: a few new sun spots, patches that look darker than they did in May, skin that feels rough and dull no matter what we put on it.

That’s why fall is when our treatment rooms fill up with chemical peels. Honestly, it’s the best time of year to get one. Here’s what a peel actually does, who it’s right for, and why we think it belongs on your calendar every single fall at our Tigard, OR and Vancouver, WA med spas.

The basics

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a blend of acids applied to your skin that helps it shed its outer, damaged layers. As that old skin sheds, fresh, healthy cells come up in its place. The result is brighter, smoother, more even skin.

It sounds intense. It actually isn’t. The peel itself takes minutes. No needles, no numbing cream.

Why we use VI Peels

At Amélie we use VI Peel®, a medium-depth, medical-grade peel. We chose it for one big reason: it’s safe for every skin tone, Fitzpatrick I through VI.

Traditional peels can trigger extra pigment in deeper skin tones. VI Peel’s blend of acids helps hold back the overproduction of melanin that can follow skin trauma. You get the glow without that risk.

We carry two formulas, and your esthetician will help you choose:

Before VI Peel Precision + Peptides: melasma and brown sun damage across the cheek After VI Peel Precision + Peptides: visibly lighter, more even skin tone

VI Peel Precision + Peptides For melasma, sun spots, and stubborn pigment. It lifts existing dark spots while telling your skin to slow down melanin production.

Before VI Peel Purify with Precision + Peptides: active inflamed acne and dark post-acne marks After VI Peel Purify with Precision + Peptides: clearer skin with faded acne marks

VI Peel Purify with Precision + Peptides For active acne, acne marks, and scarring. It reduces acne-causing bacteria and clogged pores, fades post-acne pigment, and supports collagen so scarring softens over time.

What we treat

What do chemical peels treat?

VI Peels treat acne, acne scars, dark spots, melasma, sun damage, uneven skin tone, texture, and dullness, revealing clearer, brighter, more even-looking skin.

VI Chemical Peels are designed to improve pigmentation, acne, uneven texture, and signs of sun damage. Depending on the specific VI Peel formula, they can treat:

  • Melasma and sun/UV damage
  • Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from breakouts
  • Active acne and hormonal acne
  • Acne scarring and uneven texture
  • Oily, congested, or inflamed skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull or rough skin
  • Early signs of aging, including loss of collagen and elasticity

For example, VI Peel Precision + Peptides is particularly focused on stubborn pigmentation, melasma, UV damage, and PIH, while VI Peel Purify with Precision + Peptides is geared more toward active acne, post-acne pigmentation, congestion, and textural acne scarring.

Here’s how those concerns show up on real skin, and the formula we usually reach for.

Is it for you

Who should get a chemical peel?

Most people, honestly. Even people with sensitized skin. A peel is a really good place to start if you:

  • Came out of summer with new sun spots or freckles that won’t fade
  • Have melasma that flared in the heat
  • Are still looking at dark marks from breakouts that healed months ago
  • Keep breaking out, especially along the jaw and chin
  • Have acne scarring or uneven texture you can feel
  • Just look dull and tired, and your skincare isn’t cutting it anymore

That includes deeper skin tones. And it includes men. Sun damage and acne scars don’t care who you are. See what we offer in men’s aesthetics.

When to wait

A peel isn’t right for everyone, every time. Hold off if:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You’re allergic to aspirin
  • You’ve taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6 months
  • You have an active cold sore, sunburn, or open skin
  • You have a big event in the next week

Not sure? Just ask. We look at your skin and your health history first, every time. That’s what physician-led care means to us.

Peel season

Why fall is the best time for a chemical peel

You can get a peel any time of year. But fall is when everything lines up.

  1. Summer’s damage is showing. Sun spots and melasma tend to look their worst after months of sun and heat. Fall is when you can actually see what you’re treating.
  2. The sun backs off. Freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to UV, so the less sun you’re in while you heal, the better. Shorter days and gray Pacific Northwest skies make that easy. You still need SPF every day, though. Clouds don’t block UV.
  3. Healing fits real life. You’ll skip the gym and heavy sweating for a couple of days, and your skin may flake for a few more. That’s a lot easier in sweater weather than in the middle of lake season.
  4. A full series finishes before the holidays. Peels work best as a series of three, about four weeks apart. Start in early fall and your third peel is done before the holidays. Right on time for the parties and the photos.

Make it an every-fall habit

Here’s the part most people miss. A peel isn’t one and done.

Your skin keeps living its life. Another summer. More sun. Hormones. The occasional breakout. Sun damage builds a little every year, so it makes sense to clear it every year.

Think of a fall peel series like a dental cleaning for your skin. Same time each year, before things stack up. If you have melasma, it matters even more, because ongoing maintenance peels help keep it under control.

Amélie Beauty Bank members save 10% on all products and services, which makes a yearly series easier to keep up with.

Fall is also a popular season for laser treatments like BBL Photofacial, Moxi, and Halo. Not sure whether a peel or a laser is the right call? That’s exactly what a consultation is for.

Your visit

What to expect, from appointment to fresh skin

A VI Peel is quick and predictable. Most people are back to their normal routine the same day.

  1. Your appointment, about 30 minutes. Your esthetician cleanses and preps your skin, then applies the peel in layers. Expect a warm tingle for a minute or two before it settles down.
  2. That evening. You go home with the peel on. It keeps working for a few hours, then you wash it off and start the post-peel kit we send home with you.
  3. Days 2 to 7. Some people see visible peeling. Others have little to none. You may notice some dryness, flaking, or tightness. Either way, your skin is renewing.
  4. After day 7. Smoother texture and a brighter, more even tone.

Taking care of your skin after a peel

  • Follow your post-peel kit instructions
  • Keep your skin moisturized
  • Wear SPF every single day. Our Colorescience tinted sunscreens make that easy.
  • Pause retinol and exfoliating products until your skin has finished renewing
  • Skip the gym and heavy sweating for a couple of days
  • And please, don’t pick

Chemical peel FAQs

Does a chemical peel hurt?

Not really. Most people feel a warm tingle or mild sting for a minute or two while it goes on, and then it calms down.

How much downtime is there?

Downtime can vary from person to person. Some people experience visible peeling, while others have little to no peeling at all. If peeling occurs, it usually begins around day 2–3 and can last several days. You may experience some dryness, flaking, or tightness as your skin renews.

Most people are able to return to their normal activities right away, though your skin may look and feel different as it goes through the peeling or renewal process.

Is a chemical peel safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. VI Peel is formulated for all Fitzpatrick skin types, I through VI. Purify with Precision + Peptides was actually designed with melanin-rich, acne-prone skin in mind.

How many chemical peels will I need?

You’ll see a difference after one. For melasma, stubborn pigment, or active acne, a series of three gives the best results, spaced about four weeks apart.

How often should I get a chemical peel?

We like a series of three every fall. If you have melasma, maintenance peels between series help keep it under control. Your esthetician will build a plan around your skin.
