Facial Rejuvenation is a combination of procedures to create facial harmony. The best outcomes depend on a person’s desired results, skin condition, and facial features. This can be achieved surgically, non-surgically, or in combination. One way that we approach facial rejuvenation here at Amélie is through the combination of Botox and dermal filler.
Botox is an injectable medication (neurotoxin) that works by temporarily weakening specific muscles so they contract with less strength or are paralyzed. When these muscles are unable to contract it can create a smooth appearance on skin and soften wrinkles. Giving us that refreshed and well rested appearance we all love. Although I keep mentioning Botox, there are actually five FDA approved neurotoxins available in the U.S.: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, and Jeauveau.
Dermal fillers are gel-like products made out of hyaluronic acid (HA fillers). These fillers come in a variety of thicknesses and are chosen based on where they are being used and what role they are serving. They can help fill or soften folds, lines, and creases. As well as add volume to places that we want to look more full or defined.
So why combine Botox and filler? Botox and filler approach the face in different ways to soften wrinkles, facial lines, add volume, and combat signs of aging. Botox relaxes dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated facial movements like squinting and frowning; dermal fillers smooth out static wrinkles, which are visible even when the face is at rest. Dermal fillers restore lost volume and help to sculpt youthful looking contours and definition. These two treatments have a synergistic effect when used together.
Additionally, using Botox and dermal fillers together can also prolong the results of treatment. The hyaluronic acid in many fillers tends to break down faster in areas of the face that are very animated and active (such as around the mouth). It can be helpful to first use Botox to relax muscle movement, so the hyaluronic acid is then less likely to break down as quickly.
Finally, both Botox and dermal fillers are non-invasive and well-tolerated by patients. There is very little downtime and the results appear within a few days. Using Botox and filler together is a great way to maintain a youthful appearance. Skin will remain smooth (Botox) and volumized (Filler) with minimal downtime and cost.
